We needed a way to celebrate the beginning of summer, and we so try not to miss a chance to celebrate anything, so we called our good friends the Anderson family and headed on down to South Carolina for a short visit. (When visiting ANYWHERE with three kids we have learned to keep it short. It is the only way to guarantee a return invitation!)
Benji had already started teaching his summer class, so we couldn't leave for Columbia until the afternoon. We arrived Friday night and had pizza in the park which we followed up with a short swim. (Can you imagine having a pool in your neighborhood? What a dream!) Anyway, we swam until it was starting to get dark and then we headed back to the Anderson residence for some Texas sheet cake and playing on the wii. Which was of course, followed up with my favorite activity, talking until the wee hours of the morning when everyone is barely coherent. (Everyone knows that Texas cake is best when consumed at 1:00 AM!)
The next morning we got up and had a great breakfast and then we headed out to the zoo. We saw all the animals, ate lunch in some fantastic gardens, and rode the train from one end to the next. Due to the South Carolina heat, we even splurged and bought Slurpees, a treat I haven't had since I was probably about thirteen.
That afternoon we went swimming again. (I know, awesome! It really is doubtful I would ever get ANYTHING done with a pool so readily available.) We then returned back to the Anderson house for some burgers and hot dogs. When it was time to go our kids cried the whole way out of the subdivision. There is something special about getting together with old friends. It was a great start to a perfect summer!
